Sheena Rogers from Little Moccasins Learning Centre AHS in Williams Lake writes to say:
“I thought I would share our article from the local paper. From this we received a call from CBC and they are doing a study on health and would like to highlight LMLC in their study! We are so excited!”
Our Annual General Meeting and Cultural Gathering and Training was held in combination with our ’Aboriginal Family and Community Literacy Curriculum Training‘ in Richmond, BC. AHS participants from all across Canada attended this gathering.
At our cultural retreat banquet, we celebrated and recognized Elder Eugene Harry from Eagles Nest AHS as our 2011 Ruth Henkel Award winner. The Soaring Eagle Award went to River Hill and Alison Chrysler-Hill, a Mom and Dad at Singing Frog AHS in Vancouver.
“I realize this Soaring Eagle Award is supposed to be for one person; however, I am nominating a deserving couple. I could not nominate one over the other and I believe they are both deserving of this award.”
~ Leona Antoine, Program Coordinator. Singing Frog Aboriginal Head Start
Fall Gathering: October 26-28, 2011
In October 2011, AHSABC held their Fall Gathering in Richmond BC. Our program coordinators from each of the 12 sites, along with Elders and parents, met to create the new Strategic Plan for 2011 to 2014.
Dr. Jan Hare from UBC shared her research on transitioning Aboriginal children into preschools. PAC parents took part in a workshop where they were asked for input regarding the Stepping Stones to School Project. This new resource will offer tools to AHS programs that help students and families make a more successful transition into Kindergarten.
We also celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the AHSABC with a slideshow and entertainment by Art Napoleon and Aaron Murray.
Fall Gathering: October 18-20, 2010
AHSABC is hosting the Fall Gathering in Richmond, BC, to welcome everyone to the 2010-2011 program year. What a busy time for all of our project staff and families!
Annually, the AHSABC brings the Board and Parent Representatives together to review the direction AHSABC is going, celebrate our successes and provide direction for future activity. We also try to provide valuable training opportunities and experiences.
This year we are excited to be partnering with the Provincial AIDP office, and Success By 6 in hosting a province-wide conference called the ‘2nd Gathering Our Knowledge Weaving Our Basket’ Forum, where we invite all our AHS Coordinators to attend and participate.
We are also partnering with UBC’s Department of Language and Literacy Education in our ‘Supporting Family Literacy in AHS' Training for our AHS Parent Representatives and ECE/Family Involvement Workers.
Time is also set aside for AHSABC program members to share stories and pictures from the past 15 years in order to celebrate the progress we have made in enriching our Aboriginal families' lives through Head Start programs. These will become part of our 15th Anniversary Celebration Project.
This Gathering offers us a rich experience and meaningful opportunity to share with each other and to learn from each other. See you there!
